A new kind of ‘old’ pub, The Broad Chare offers all the best bits of a traditional ale-house  –  well-kept beer, honest food, friendly company, good cheer  –  with a fresh, modern touch.  Nothing fancy, nothing fussy, just genuine warmth and an open-hearted welcome.  A proper pub.

One of those pubs you thought had disappeared (along with whistling milkmen and red telephone boxes), it’s the result of a happy partnership between Terry Laybourne’s 21 Hospitality Group and Live Theatre, one of the country’s leading new writing theatres.

Proper Food

Our menus offer honest, home-cooked food like pubs used to serve: tasty, satisfying, proudly British.  You can enjoy a proper sit-down-at-the-table meal or, if you’re more in the mood for grazing while nursing your pint or you’re a bit pushed for time, try our Bar Snacks.  These are Bar Snacks with attitude; generous, full of flavour, deliberately tempting  – hand-raised pork pies, Scotch eggs, cauliflower fritters  –  they’re almost a meal in themselves.  Why not order a selection and share with friends?

Lunchtimes and evenings, tuck in your napkin for handsome starters such as potted shrimps or crab on toast, hearty main courses (perhaps fish pie or steak and chips) and old-fashioned puddings.  Daily specials, such as Friday’s fish and chips, plus a platter of British cheeses add more choice.  Eat upstairs or down, on your own or with friends, one course or four.  It’s your pub, you choose.

Proper Pub

We’re big on warmth, low on fussiness: stripped wood floors, high bar stools, painted brickwork and comfy leather banquettes.  Sup your pint beside our polished-oak bar or tuck yourself away in the Snug behind the frosted glass partition.  You can hear yourself talk, concentrate on the crossword or nod off quietly in the corner.

Upstairs in the Dining Room, it’s all reassuringly simple with solid wood tables, sturdy schoolroom chairs and shiny brass coat-hooks.

Proper Beer

(and other drinks)

We choose our beers for their quality, craftsmanship and interest.  House ales are from Wylam Brewery, up the Tyne valley, and include our own-label brew, ‘The Writer’s Block’, a lovely dry-hopped pale ale.  We have regularly changing guest beers, Guinness and Peroni on tap, and an interesting range of European bottled beers.  Plus there’s top-quality Aspall’s Suffolk cider, 14 wines by the glass and a quirky collection of whiskies.

Please note that our guest ales are subject to change and that although we endeavour to keep our online menus up to date, ales on offer in the restaurant may differ.

“Great food and understated but attentive service, lovely buzz of conversation with good but not overwhelming music. Highly recommended”

“Really lovely meal, seasonal ingredients put together in an innovative way resulting in great flavours. The staff really made the evening for us. The lady that served us was friendly, helpful and her attention to detail was impressive. The food can be great but if the staff aren’t great also it can ruin things ! That wasn’t the case at Broad Chare and we will definitely be returning.”

“This restaurant was a great find. The menu is seasonal and has one or two different dishes. We found the food to be very well presented and delicious and not over priced. The restaurant was very busy but the service was good. Would highly recommend.”

“As my, sometimes very critical, mother used to say about good people, “she or he has no sides!” The Broad Chare has nothing but good sides! I’ve already recommended it to several friends and work colleagues. I will go again, as soon as I’m back in Newcastle.”

The People

Our pub is your pub.  Simple as that.  We get a genuine kick out of making you feel at home.  We won’t ignore you at the bar, we’ll serve your drinks with a smile, we’ll even try to remember your name.

Who will you find here?  People who like good beer, good food, good conversation, good company.  Oh, and good cheer – that indefinable, warm, fuggy feeling that only the best pubs manage.  You’ll meet new people, re-discover old pals.  Why, you might even make us your local.
